Massage in Thailand is massively popular, massage is not a regular thing in a lot of western socities, here in Thailand it is and it is very inexpensive and well worth taking advantage as it is a very relaxing experience - soothing and stress releaving. If you come to Thailand you should not go away without having had a massage - even just a foot massage.

In Thailand the main types of massage are: Thai massage, oil massage, facial massage and foot massages.

 

Thai massage Traditional Thai Massage, in practice for over 2500 years, is based on the Ayurvedic principles (originating out of India) of balancing one's energy. In both eastern and western healing systems, the idea of maintaining balance or equilibrium in the body is the key to good health. Thai Massage is based on the idea that there are energy lines, or Sen lines, that run through the body. These Sen are the passage for energy - and it is now known that the lines correspond with blood vessels in the body. When these Sen lines become blocked, the energy becomes stagnant and the body loses its balance. Massage is a form of complementary and alternative medicine. A lot of other health techniques are also based on these idea's - Acupuncture, mctimoney chiropractor, yoga etc - in fact Thai massage has been known as "the lazy man's yoga". Wat Pho Wat Pho (the temple of the reclining Budha) is at the centre of Thai massage, here near the river by the Grand Palace and across the river from Wat Arun the monks teach massage. There is a large massage school, so you can take massage courses here or alternatively it is a good place to get a massage. The Peninsula is a top class hotel, 200m up the road from Baan Sathorn Chaophraya and has a large Spa connected too it. This massage place, just round the corner is the closest to Baan Sathorn Choaphraya. They do a good foot massage here and it is a good place to go at a moments notice. Bangkok is full of Markets often amongst all the stalls are plenty of foot massage places - this is where you drop after you shop. Thai massage can also he painful sometimes depending on how hard they work, some people say "no pain no gain", but I am not sure if I agree with this, so if it is a bit rough ask them to tone it down a bit - "Jeb" is the word for pain Oil massage is gentler than Thai massage, the massuer uses different oils that you can choose and it similar to a swedish massage and often also referred to as a deep tissue massage and is very relaxing experience. Facial massage uses oils and creams and generally movement is in an upward direction to counter the 24/7 effects of gravity on your face. If a regular occurrence it is designd to keep the skin tight and youthful and reduce wingles and sagging of the face, the neck is also targeted and tightened to help reduce the threat of a double chin and the forehead is another spot to smooth away any lines Foot massage takes it’s origins from China from over 5000 years ago and is based on reflexology, according to Chinese medicine, the sensory nerves of the internal organs that spread throughout the body are mainly gathered around the soles of the feet. Therefore massaging the foot stimulating the functions of the internal organs, it can be slightly uncomfortable at times but any pain will go when finished. You will usually get a short head massage with the foot massage as well. Highly recommended if you wanting a relaxing hour within the day.

Healthland is a very good Spa (they have various sites in Bangkok) the closest is just located up Sathorn road in the direction towards Lumpini park on the left about 200M past Surasak skytrain station. It is quite a busy establishment and generally frequented by Thai's more than tourists. It is best to phone and book especially as busy times - otherwise you will end up waiting, if you select a private room rather than the public rooms the wait will be less but Bt100 more expensive. When you book then you will also automatically get a private room. In fact as a foriegner the public rooms are less acessible and I suppose that is the surcharge you pay some times. A Thai massages take about two hours, I have been there many times and it is very relaxing with a cup of Thai tea afterwards. Two hour Thai massage: Bt350, private room Bt100. You can buy a ticket of ten massages for Bt2,500 A tip is necessary afterwards to the massuer I would say around Bt100-Bt200 Other massage places around Bangkok You will find massage parlours everywhere in Bangkok, including the shopping malls, MBK has various and a facial massage is quite popular. Sukhumvit is also a popular area for massage parlours as is the Silom road and Sala Daeng (Patpong area).
